Thermoelectric Cooling for TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) System

TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) System uses Thermoelectric Cooling:

Thermoelectric Cooling for TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) System     thermoelectric panel coolers

TACAN is a radio system which can provide aircrew with navigation and bearing information. A market leader in military solutions uses TECA Model AHP-1800XHC as a standard component to provide cooling to their mobile TACAN system. AHP-1800XHC is well designed for this type of application. For reliable performance under harsh conditions, we use military-grade sealed fans and components on the hot side (external to enclosure). The AHP-1800XHC heats and cools as needed without maintenance or repair down time. This has been crucial for our customer, who markets their mobile TACAN system as self-sufficient.

TECA has been designing and manufacturing for harsh military environments for decades. Contact us to discuss your our solutions for NEMA-4X/Harsh Environment and Shock & Vibration.

Cooling a NEMA-4 Enclosure with Precision

Cooling a NEMA-4 Enclosure with Precision:

Cooling a NEMA-4 Enclosure with Precision   Cooling Enclosure
A flow testing facility required precise heating and cooling of a NEMA-4 enclosure in an outdoor application. The customer’s NEMA-4 instrument box houses very sensitive transducers and data acquisition equipment.

TECA Model AHP-1200XEHC paired with the TC-3400 remote temperature controller protects the enclosure’s contents from extreme temperatures in the ambient. The customer can monitor and set the controller without opening the NEMA-4 enclosure. Custom programming achieves exact set points as specified by the customer. The sealed, industrial grade external fan allows for wash down of the enclosure and exposure to the outdoor environment, all while maintaining a closed loop system.

TIGHT TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Tight Temperature Control Within Small Enclosure:

A manufacturer of specialty materials required cooling and heating of small enclosures. The system pictured here is used for the mixing of helium and hydrogen with dew point control.

TECA Model AHP-301FFHC is used with a TECA PID temperature controller to regulate the temperature of the enclosure in order to establish the moisture content of the “wet gas”, which is blended with dry gas to fix the dew point by way of the Buck Equation.

The customer is pleased with the results and continues to build more systems using TECA air conditioners and temperature controllers.

the AHP-301FF series is now replaced by newer model the AHP-401 series.

COOLING GLOVE BOXES

Cooling Glove Boxes:

A customer manufactures a range of glove box systems for atmosphere control applications in clinical and industrial environments. TECA air conditioners are a vital component on a variety of the glove box models that this customer produces. Standard and customized versions of TECA air conditioners from the AHP-1800 Series are used to control the glove box temperature to below ambient.

Clinical applications primarily revolve around cell and bacterial studies within cancer research, bio-fuels studies, sleep apnea, anaerobic microbiology research and clinical applications etc.

Industrial applications include product weighing or assembly with humidity and temperature maintenance.

WIND TURBINE APPLICATION

Wind Turbine:

The applications for AHP-1802XE’s are Vestas wind turbines, one located in Greece and one in the south of Japan.

“We are installing sensitive measurement equipment, and need to control the inside temperature of the measurement panel. One panel is in each of the rotors in the hub and the two others are in the nacelles (rotating and non rotating). We have just decided to make the two panels into one in the nacelle (where the panel in not rotating).”

INCUBATOR COOLING

Incubator Cooling / Insect Rearing Chamber:

Incubators used in the rearing of insects for research often experience thermal failures due to the acids inherent in the biology of the insects. The acidic environment that insects create can quickly corrode a standard, compressor-based cooling system- even if its copper coils are coated. High humidity adds to the problem because droplets of concentrated acid will collect on the cooling components.

The solid-state nature of TECA’s thermoelectric air conditioners solves the problem offering reliability and virtually maintenance-free operation.

A published life science researcher from a local university contacted us because he experienced several failures from his compressor-based air conditioner units. He is raising flies in an incubator, and requires an accurate set point. The TECA Model AHP-1200 Thermoelectric Air Conditioner is the perfect solution. The air conditioner keeps the incubator to 18C as the customer requested. Using a remote, programmable temperature controller (TECA Model TC-3400) the customer is getting the accuracy he needs and the convenience he wanted from a remote controller.

COMPACT MILITARY AIR CONDITIONER

Compact Military Air Conditioner:

The contact to engineering read pretty much like this:

  • Wants A/C, 17.5 x 5.5 footprint, 150 W @ 0 Dt, He is in a hurry
  • Desert Application
  • Unit will require transport in, then it will sit for months, then it will go somewhere else
  • Single set point 35 °C control?
  • Size, can go 6″ on the outside

We suggested AHP-1200X, he said they didn’t choose because of no DC.  We could make it DC!  Nope, won’t fit, air flows are bad, 24 VDC, running off generator, NEMA 4X, Mil grade fans, 50 °C max, urgent need!

A little more than month later the order was placed and about 6 weeks after that a batch of custom air conditioners was being shipped.
